Will Chevy's new minicar spark a color war?

I remember what happened in the late 1960s.

Ford got into a battle with Dodge and Plymouth for color supremacy. Each brand offered a wide range of wild colors with attention-grabbing names. I don't recall which automaker was first to the paint booth.

Ford created Grabber Blue, Grabber Orange and Grabber Green -- bright, in-your-face colors that were marketed on Mustang, and, I believe the Ford Maverick.

Dodge and Plymouth shared Top Banana Yellow, Hemi Orange, Go Mango and others. The paint was available on the Challenger and Barracuda and a few other models.

The current versions of the Mustang and Challenger have their share of wild, bright colors, as does the Camaro.

Minicars and subcompacts just might be the next group targeted for a bit of fun.

The 2013 Chevrolet Spark's paint palette features dazzling colors with fun names -- Lemonade Yellow, Salsa Red, Jalapeno Green, Denim Blue and Techno Pink.

Earlier this month I interviewed Cristi Landy, Spark's marketing director. The story appeared this past Monday in Automotive News.

"This car is all about fun; it is all about expressiveness," Landy said. "It just made sense to bring in some of these very expressive colors into the palette," including what she described as silvery pink -- Techno Pink.

How about a version of Dodge's Plum Crazy Purple, too?
