DETROIT -- Volkswagen has more than just an SUV offensive in the works for the U.S. market. A new van and a high-performance Golf hatchback also could be headed this way.

VW development chief Hans-Jakob Neusser said VW is close to deciding whether to produce the Golf R400 concept shown at the Beijing auto show in April. The pocket rocket is capable of 395 hp and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in under four seconds.

"We are just in front of the decision to do it or not, but I personally think that we have good conditions to do it," said Neusser at the Detroit auto show this month.

Michael Horn, CEO of Volkswagen of America, said the company also is studying the feasibility of a new van for the U.S.

One option could be the next-generation Crafter, a commercial van sold in Europe that is currently based on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. Daimler has made the van for Volkswagen under a deal that ends next year.

Another candidate could be the Caddy, a small van based on the version of VW's MQB platform that underpins compact vehicles such as the Golf.

"We're studying this, and, personally, I believe we should do something based on the technology which we already have in this market," Horn said at the show.

Those products would likely dovetail with a crossover and SUV offensive that VW plans for the U.S. market. Leading that offensive will be a U.S.-built midsize crossover arriving in the first quarter of 2017, followed by a redesigned, long-wheelbase Tiguan compact crossover that arrives in the second quarter of 2017.

"I think first we have to make our two core models right, the Tiguan and the midsize SUV," Horn said. "But then there's room for derivatives, whether they're priced upward or priced downward."
