Construction of Tesla's plant in Germany began not with a bang, but with a deactivation.

Seven U.S. bombs from World War II were found in the plot of land outside Berlin where the electric-car maker from Palo Alto, Calif., wants to build its first European factory, local authorities said last week. The duds weigh about 50 kg (110 pounds) each, and explosives experts will defuse them, said a spokesman for the interior minister in the state of Brandenburg, where the property is located.

Tesla has an agreement to buy the 300-hectare plot in Grüenheide for €40.91 million ($45 million), Reuters reported.

It's not uncommon to turn up old bombs in Germany, according to Reuters. Last week in Cologne, where Ford has its European headquarters, a much larger — 500 kg — WWII bomb was found.
