When it comes to simple traffic rules, many drivers have large gaps. But also with cyclists. This is now shown by the frightening results of an ADAC test.

In a Germany-wide ADAC knowledge test for cyclists, many cyclists showed a lack of knowledge of the current traffic regulations . Only one percent of the 4,500 cyclists aged 14 and over were able to correctly answer almost all test questions, as the automobile club announced on Thursday. On average, 60 percent of the answers were correct.

According to the information, questions were asked about, among other things, knowledge of cycle paths , children on the sidewalk, alcohol limits and the use of mobile phones. According to ADAC, not only were many answers incomplete or incorrect, but also self-assessment and actual knowledge of the regulations gaped widely: Almost 80 percent of those questioned adhere to the rules according to their own statements, but only partially know them.

What does a blue cycle path sign mean?

According to the survey, only 18 percent knew that cycling children up to eight years of age had to use the sidewalk. Only 15 percent were able to say that this is allowed up to the age of ten if there is neither a built cycle path nor a hard shoulder. Only a quarter of the respondents also knew the obligation to use as soon as a blue cycle path sign was put up.

In addition, more than a third of those questioned were wrongly convinced that driving on the one-way street was allowed. 40 percent were also not aware that alcohol on the saddle from 1.6 per thousand is classified as a criminal offense, punished with points and a fine and also threatens to lose the driver's license.

"Ignorance can be dangerous"

In other areas, on the other hand, many cyclists would have been well informed. Almost 80 percent knew the rule that cyclists are not allowed to drive in pedestrian zones. At 63 percent, almost two thirds of those surveyed knew that they were not allowed to use bus lanes.

"Ignorance can be dangerous because it increases the risk of conflicts and in the worst case leads to accidents," explained ADAC traffic president Gerhard Hillebrand. This applies to all road users. For this reason, both drivers and cyclists should regularly find out about new features and brush up on their knowledge of the rules.
